Autoblog Classifieds Finds: 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280C

Filed under:
,,

Our featured Paul Bracq –designed Benz is a 280C, meaning that the engine is the largest available for these cars, but it’s fitted with a Solex carburetor instead of the 280CE’s Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, or einspritzung. That would give the M110 engine 160 horsepower, but the carbureted one has to do with 145. The automatic transmission here is a four-speed. The Z-28 Camaro in 1984 came with a 5.0-liter V8 making a respectable 190 horsepower. Buyers who went with the base four-cylinder engine, however, got just 92 Iron Duke horses. Few did. Here’s a very rare Iron Duke Camaro in a Central Valley self-service wrecking yard.

BMW won’t build this classic Mini Electric, but we wish they would

Filed under:
,,,,,,,,

We have good news, and we have bad news. First, the good: BMW is showing off this ridiculously fun classic Mini at the New York Auto Show, complete with the addition of a fully modernized electric powertrain. And now, the bad: It’s a one-off that will not be put into production. To clarify, Mini will indeed unveil a full electric model sometime in 2019, but it’ll be based on the new Cooper, not the classic you see here.

Sunday Drive: Classic American nameplates and one exciting new German

Filed under:
,,,,,,,,

Today’s look back at last week’s biggest automotive stories focuses first on the Jeep Wagoneer, an unequivocal American classic. Not only did it play a pivotal role in kicking off America’s current sport utility vehicle craze, it legitimized the Jeep brand in the mind of consumers looking not just for something to ably take them off the beaten path, but to do so in comfort, with the entire family along for the ride. So it comes as little surprise that Jeep decided to take one vintage Wagoneer, m

There may be no hotter marque than Porsche at the moment, with classic models skyrocketing in price and new models in higher demand than ever. So it was no surprise when the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles announced its newest exhibition would highlight the Stuttgart automaker. The museum has done a stellar job of gathering vehicles for new exhibits since its remodel two years ago, the “Seeing Red: 70 Years of Ferrari” display coming quickly to mind.

It’s Easter time, and that means it’s time for the 52nd Annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari, held March 24 through April 1, where thousands of off-roaders crawl, scrape and scramble over the rugged trails of Moab, Utah. Junkyard Gem: 1972 Porsche 914

Filed under:
,,,

During the second half of the 1960s, Porsche sold a four-cylinder version of the 911 as their lowest-priced car. The 912 sold well at first, but replaced by a joint Volkswagen-Porsche project, the 914, in 1969. The six-cylinder 914-6 was badged as a Porsche in Europe, while the four-cylinder 914 was sold as a Volkswagen-Porsche. In North America, all 914s were Porsche-badged, and they sold very well. Here’s a ’72 project car that got junked in Denver before completion.
