Filed under:
,,,,,,,,

Full-size sedans aren’t exactly in great demand at the moment, and at least one of the vehicles in this comparison has been rumored to be on the endangered species list. Yet, we’ve just had our first drive in the 2019 Toyota Avalon, and if anything has a chance of rejuvenating the segment a bit, it’s an all-new version of what has long been the segment’s benchmark.

Filed under:
,,

If you live in an area where snow and ice are common in the winter, travel on unimproved roads for fun or work, or simply want an extra degree of security in inclement weather, you should really consider an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. Senate votes to kill rule against discriminatory auto lending

Filed under:
,,,,,

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday invalidated Obama-era guidance aimed at preventing auto lenders from charging borrowers higher rates based on factors such as race or national origin. The Senate voted 51 to 47 to disapprove the guidance, which was issued in 2013 by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and regarded by critics as an overstep of the agency’s powers.

Economy-car buyers increasingly get the best deal on technology

Filed under:
,,,,,,,,,,

One of the great things about technology is – with the exception of Apple products – consumers get more for their money every year. For example, the first 1GB USB drive I bought in 2005 cost me $30. Today you can get 10 for that price, delivered to your door thanks to Amazon. The same goes for car tech.

Tesla batteries will live longer than expected, survey finds

Filed under:
,,,,,,,,,

Tesla batteries retain over 90 percent of their charging power after 160,000 miles, according to data gathered by a Dutch-Belgium Tesla owners group. According to its survey of over 350 owners, the EVs dropped about 5 percent of their capacity after 50,000 miles, but lose it at a much slower rate after that. If the trend holds, most Tesla vehicles will still have 90 percent capacity after around 300,000 km (185,000 miles), and 80 percent capacity after a whopping 800,000 km (500,000 miles).

Crash test videos show how rust compromises safety

Filed under:
,,,,

These recently released Swedish videos serve as a reminder that rust isn’t just a cosmetic flaw, when it comes to cars. The insurance company Folksam and the homeowner organization Villaägarnas Riksförbund gathered examples of two relatively popular, but by now rusty cars, and then performed crash tests with them at the Thatcham Research facility in Britain. The results are sobering.
