GM recalling 117,000 sedans, crossovers, SUVs, pickups and vans

Cadillac CTS

General Motors has issued a stop-sale to dealers and has notified the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration of its intention to recall 117,000 vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Of those vehicles, only 4,500 are at dealerships.

The affected vehicles include the Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Impala sedans, fullsize SUVs (Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL), Lambda-platform crossovers (Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia), heavy-duty pickups (Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD) and fullsize vans (Chevy Express and GMC Savana). The sedans and body-on-frame SUVs include model years 2013 and 2014, while the CUVs, heavy-duty pickups and vans are limited to MY2014.

GM confirmed the recall to Autoblog via an emailed statement (which we’ve included below). According to the statement, the issue at hand in what is the company’s 69th recall of 2014 covers the chassis-control module. Automotive News is reporting that a problem in the chassis-control system could cause a short in the module, which could cause the engine to stall or fail to start. The fault could also affect the trailer-brake control, provided it’s equipped.

According to GM spokesman Alan Adler, the company doesn’t know of any crashes, injuries or deaths due to the issue, and only one percent of the vehicles being recalled will need to have their chassis-control modules replaced.

Cadillac recalls 17,500 SRX CUVs in Canada

Cadillac SRX

When reporting on recalls, Autoblog generally tries to focus on the US market. However, a recent campaign in Canada seems important enough to be worth mentioning because it could eventually affect American drivers. General Motors is repairing 17,481 Canadian examples of the Cadillac SRX from the 2010-2015 model years because of the possibility of a loose nut in the rear suspension. For the moment, the automaker hasn’t yet announced whether the CUV in the US would require a similar campaign.

The notice was dated September 18, 2014, on the website for Transport Canada, similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US. It says, “the rear suspension toe link jam nuts” might not have been sufficiency tightened, which could allow a rear wheel to turn “inboard or outboard” while driving. If this happens, it could cause a sudden change in handling. Canadian Cadillac dealers are inspecting the parts and replacing the toe link if necessary.

This campaign isn’t listed on the GM’s running recall tally from September, which includes exported models, but it does list four other campaigns for the SRX this year – three in this range of years and one for the 2004-2006 model. Autoblog reached out to the company to ask about the possibility of this recall expanding to the US and were told “We have not publicly announced US recalls” for the issues affecting the SRX. The New York Times was given a similar quote. Scroll down to read the notice from Transport Canada.

Harley recalls 107,000 motorcycles due to clutch problem

Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic

Harley-Davidson is getting in on the recall chorus this year, announcing a six-figure callback of its Touring and CVO lines of cruisers. 105,746 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited, Police Electra Glide, Street Glide Special, Street Glide, Tri Glide Ultra, CVO Limited, CVO Road King, CVO Breakout, Electra Glide Ultra Classic Twin Cooled, Ultra Limited Shrine, Street Glide Shrine and CVO Softail Deluxe are affected.

The problem focuses on clutch master cylinder, which could be prone to failure, and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, could reduce the “pressure available to keep the clutch disengaged.” If the clutch engages, NHTSA says the bike could creep forward unintentionally, raising the risk of a crash.

Separately, HD is also recalling 1,384 XG500 and XG750 (better known as Street 500 and Street 750) due to a problem with the neck of the fuel tank filler. Apparently, the neck may be “insufficiently flat,” which could prevent the fuel cap from sealing properly and increasing the chance of a fuel spill.

The Touring line recall only affects 2014 models, while the 1,400 Street bikes are from model year 2015. In both cases, Harley will be notifying owners of the affected bikes, who will need to report in for free repairs (either a rebuilt clutch master cylinder or a new fuel tank).

Take a look below for the NHTSA bulletins on both the cruiser recall and the Street recall.

Toyota recalls 690,000 Tacoma trucks for rusty leaf springs, fire risk

2010 Toyota Tacoma 4x2 PreRunner

Toyota has announced that it will be issuing a recall of 690,000 Tacoma pickups from model years 2005 through 2011. The affected vehicles include both the four-wheel-drive model and the two-wheel-drive PreRunner (but not the standard 4×2 pickups), which may have a rather serious problem with their rear suspensions.

In some cases, corrosion and stress could cause one of the three or four leaves in the rear suspension’s leaf springs to fracture. While the trucks can still be driven with a broken leaf, Toyota is concerned that it could move out of position and impact other components in the rear of the truck, with a particular focus on the fuel tank. Needless to say, but a piece of metal continuously impacting anything, let alone the fuel tank, is cause for concern.

As of this writing, there have been no reports of crashes, injuries, fires or deaths due to this problem, although that won’t stop Toyota from informing all affected customers of the issue. Those 690,000 owners will need to report in to dealers for inspections and, if necessary, repairs.

Scroll down for the press release from Toyota.

Takata airbag recall may soon embroil GM

gm chevy airbag deployment

When it comes to recalls, two companies have taken up the bulk of the news lately. One is General Motors, which has been cleaning house in the wake of the ignition switch debacle. The other is Takata, an airbag manufacturer that supplies some of the biggest names in the business. But now those two recall giants could be intersecting as reports indicate that GM may be forced to recall some of its vehicles (no specific nameplates were singled out, including the Chevy Volt, which is pictured above performing well in a crash test) due to the faulty Takata airbags as well.

The problem, for those of you just joining, revolves around the Japanese company’s airbags, which have been found to deploy unexpectedly in specific geographical regions – namely those with a high level of humidity. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started investigating the issue following reports of unwarranted airbag deployment in Florida and Puerto Rico, leading to the recall of millions of vehicles.

To date, those recalls have involved Japanese automakers such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi, as well as Ford, Chrysler and BMW. GM’s addition to the list would only stand to expand the number of recalled vehicles considerably, although Reuters reports that the exact number has yet to be determined.

Ford recalling 850,000 cars and SUVs for airbag issues

Ford Escape

Ford has announced a major recall of 850,000 vehicles from model years 2013 and 2014 due to a problem with the “restraints control module.”

According to Ford, a short circuit could develop in the module, causing the airbag warning light to illuminate. In more severe cases, dependent on where the short develops, the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners may not work in the event of an accident. The problems can be more wide-ranging than that, too, as systems that rely on information from the control module, such as the stability control can be affected.

With 850,000 vehicles affected, it’s no surprise that some of Ford’s volume leaders are covered. That includes the Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans, as well as the incredibly recall-prone Escape and the C-Max MPV.

As always, it’s important to note that there have been no accidents or injuries due to this issue. Ford will be notifying owners of affected vehicles, who will need to report in for a free replacement. Of the exactly 850,050 vehicles, 746,842 are in the United States, while 82,962 are in Canada and 20,246 are from south of the border in Mexico.

Scroll down for the full Ford press release, which includes a total breakdown of production dates for the affected models.

Chrysler recalls 350k vehicles over ignition switches

Dodge Magnum

Chrysler has announced a recall covering 349,442 vehicles due to ignition switches that can either become stuck or move without warning. All of the affected vehicles are from the 2008 model year, and were built before May 12, 2008.

The automaker has learned that ignition keys on some vehicles “may not fully return to the ‘ON’ position after rotation to the ‘START’ position during engine-startup,” the company said in a statement. Additionally, “an ignition key may not fully return to the ‘ON’ position after rotation to the ‘START’ position and may inadvertently move through the ‘ON’ position to ‘ACCESSORY’ or ‘OFF.'”

Chrysler says it is unaware of any related injuries, and notes that while reduced braking, engine or steering power is possible in such instances, the airbags are not affected. The later stands in contrast to General Motors’ recent rash of high-profile recalls, and it’s an important distinction that Chrysler (understandably) felt necessary to call out in bold print in its press release.

Vehicles affected by this recall include the Dodge Charger and Magnum, Chrysler 300, Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee. 292,224 of these vehicles are in the United States, 18,976 are in Canada, 4,947 are in Mexico, and another 33,295 are outside of North America.

Owners will be notified to schedule service, which, of course, will be performed free of charge. For now, the automaker is urging owners to ensure the ignition keys are set in the “ON” position after starting their vehicles. In addition, as a “supplementary precaution,” Chrysler is urging customers to detach their ignition keys from the rest of their keys and key rings. Sounds familiar, eh?

Scroll down for the company’s official statement.

Ferrari recalls 458 Italia because its trunk is a dangerous place to stow kids

Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari is recalling 3,000 458 Italia and Spider models and, believe it or not, it’s not because they may catch fire. Nope, instead, the issue focuses on anyone that’s unfortunate enough to become trapped in the Ferrari’s perilously small frunk (front-mounted trunk).

Apparently, should someone find themselves trapped in the car’s nose, the interior release handle only lets loose one of frunk’s latches. That means that while anyone held captive by the V8-powered supercar won’t be in danger of suffocating and will still be able to call for help, the cars are still ultimately in violation of federal safety mandates.

According to Uncle Sam, should someone become trapped in a trunk, like a child, they must be able to open the trunk from the inside and escape. That can’t happen in the 458.

It’s not clear which model years are covered, although according to CNN Money, only the 458 Italia and Spider are covered by the recall. If you’re a lucky 458 Speciale owner, you’re clean and clear… we think.

Owners will be notified by Ferrari and will need to return their car to the local dealer for modifications.

GM recalls Chevy Impala, Cadillac XTS for braking problem

2014 Chevy Impala

Back in April, General Motors launched an investigation into braking issues affecting the 2014 Chevy Impala. Now there’s a recall of both the Impala and the Cadillac XTS with which it shares its Epsilon II platform.

The issue apparently revolves around the electronic parking brake, which may not properly disengage. As a result, the rear brake pads could rub the rotor even while the vehicle is in motion, causing “significant heat, smoke and sparks.” The earlier investigation had been launched following a complaint regarding the forward collision avoidance system, which is now either appears to have been unrelated or possibly a symptom of this larger issue.

The recall affects 2013-15 XTS models manufactured between February 14, 2012, and August 22, 2014, as well as 2014-15 Impalas manufactured between January 15, 2013, and August 22, 2014. The total number of affected vehicles reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration comes to precisely 132,921 units, while The Detroit News reports a higher total of 205,000 units – the difference potentially coming down to the scope within the US and more broadly across North America. Dealers will contact owners to update the software in order to fix the problem.

Toyota recalling 20k 2014 and 2015 cars and CUVs with 3.5L engines

2014 Toyota Highlander

Toyota has announced a recall of roughly 20,000 vehicles covering the 2014 Avalon, Camry, Highlander (pictured) and Sienna, as well as the 2015 Lexus RX luxury crossover. The affected vehicles are all powered the 2GR-FE engine, which in layman’s terms, is Toyota’s well-regarded 3.5-liter V6.

According to Toyota’s statement, a parts supplier might not have welded “the end cap on the right-hand fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment” correctly, meaning fuel could leak. Leaking fuel, of course, increases the chance of an engine fire. That said, no fires, crashes or injuries have been reported due to the issue.

Owners will be notified to report to dealers, where techs will check the fuel delivery pipe and fit a replacement part as necessary.

Scroll down for the full statement from Toyota.
